Blue Cat Sandwich came in to being in San Francisco in August of 2007 as one manifestation of a monumental, life-altering encounter between a soprano and a bass player. The ensuing journey has been punctuated by the delightful discovery of a shared sense of musical rightness and a series of gestalt moments, as in, “Oh my God, I had forgotten that one! I LOVE that song!” that led to recording our first album “Last at Together.” The first raw recordings began in March of 2008, in the living room of Angela’s tiny apartment on Taraval Street, with David playing an acoustic guitar and Angela kneeling and singing into a microphone resting on the coffee table (The Blue Cat’s participation was in a purely advisory capacity at this point). Later tracks included a synthesizer, David on electric guitar, Angela singing harmony and /or playing acoustic fiddle and later an electric fiddle, both of us on various percussion implements discovered in a kitchen drawer, and of course David on a fretless electric bass. The final mix of “Last at Together” was completed in September of 2008. The process of discovering, playing, discussing, interpreting and recording some of our favorites inevitably gave birth to the wish to create our own statement that would incorporate traces of all that we have listened to and loved, but step beyond that well-travelled though hallowed path into our own territory of individual expression. Early in 2009, our dear friend and talented keyboardist, Katherine (“Kitty”) Martin agreed to add her considerable abilities to our musical endeavor. Later in the same year, David and Angela entered into an entirely different kind of collaborative contract, with Kitty as Maid of Honor. The new year 2010 finds Blue Cat Sandwich finalizing a new CD project to be released in late February, incorporating several new original songs, as well as some covers of old favorites. The creative process continues. We have each opened our personal archives to examine and reinterpret our own music written years ago, and the synapses are firing rapidly in the development of new music and lyrics. We continue to meet to jam and collaborate with fellow musicians to experiment with various mixes of instruments and musical philosophies in the ongoing search for the perfect Blue Cat Sandwich. Stay tuned for further developments |
